The ﬁrst AAF use of the type in combat occurred in July 1942, staging out England to attack targets on the occupied Dutch coast with Boston IIIs ‘borrowed’ from the RAF. A-20As operating with the 5th AF began combat operations in the southwest Paciﬁc in August 1942. Many Paciﬁc-based A-20s were subsequently ﬁeld modiﬁed as “strafers” under the supervision of AAF Maj. Paul I. “Pappy” Gunn in Australia. 50-caliber forward-ﬁring machine guns and was ultimately incorporated into the production A-20G.
S. Smithson, the NA-40 emerged as the largest of the four competing designs. The aircraft’s aerodynamic conﬁguration was very advanced: a relatively thin wing utilizing several different NACA airfoil sections which was high shoulder-mounted to a very narrow, slab-sided fuselage.
