M i c r o c o m p u t e r Technologies: Today's personal microcomputer hardware delivers higher processing throughout and higher system performance that keep out-performing the less recent models. The affordable state-of-the-art 33 MHz 80486 personal computer (PC), for example, utilizes advanced single chip architecture that incorporates a numeric co-processor for math-intensive applications and a cache memory controller for fast system memory throughout. These features stack up to an impressive performance up to a few MFLOPS(compared to 38 to 384 MFLOPS by a CRAY-2 supercomputer (Perry and Zorpett, 1989)).
Let us consider, as a prototypical example, the position or velocity control of a servomotor. First, the theoretical modeling and control aspects are presented in the lectures. During the pencil-and-paper exercises that follow, the students can analyse the system in the frequency domain, draw the asymptotic Bode diagram and evaluate gain and phase margins. In the subsequent computer-aided-learning (CAL) session, it is possible to simulate and interactively design a controller. For additional analysis and simulation, the students can use MATLAB individually during their own time.

The main components encompass, besides the process to be controlled, a Macintosh II computer with a fast A / D and D/A interface board and a power amplifier (Figure 3). The Macintosh is equipped with a color screen, 5 MB RAM and a 80 MB hard disk. The MacADIOS II  data acquisition board includes two D/A converters and eight 12-bit A / D converters with a 142 kHz frequency. The amplifier produces output signals of maximum 4A in the range ± 10 V.
